What are standards? Where can I find information on standards?
Standards are “documents that provide requirements, specifications, guidelines or characteristics that can be used consistently to ensure that materials, products, processes, and services are fit for their purpose.” (ISO)
A standard is usually represented by the acronym of the issuing organization followed by a number and the date of issuance. Examples:
- ANSI B152.2-1982
- ISO 10096:1997
- IEC 60034-15:2009
Our libraries purchase a small number of standards each year based on the budget availability and faculty requests. You may search the library online catalog to see what we have.
NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) from the U.S. Department of Commerce has created helpful guidance on using Standards.
