Question

Q: What is going on for Banned Books Week?

Answer

This year, we have several fun activities going on at both Johnson and Sturgis Libraries to celebrate Banned Books Week:

Throughout the week, we will have a scavenger hunt for banned and challenged books at Sturgis Library. Keep an eye out for posters throughout the library with book covers that have been blurred for your safety. Text the word on the poster to 770-983-6547 to learn where the book is in the library. Find the book, take a shelfie, and post it on Twitter and Instagram! Don't forget to tag @KSULibraries -- the person with the most shelfies will win a prize!

You can also write a postcard to your favorite banned author. We have postcards set up at both libraries so you can let an author know how important their banned book was to you. Not a fan of postcards? We have a list of authors and their Twitter handles so you can tweet them instead! You can find the postcards at both libraries all week:

  • Johnson Library: On the first floor next to the Check Out Desk
  • Sturgis Library: On the first floor near the OwlView Wall

Take a mugshot with a banned book at both Johnson and Sturgis Library! Pose with your favorite banned or challenged book to help highlight censorship issues in schools and libraries throughout the world. We will have photographers available to take pictures of you and your book of choice at both libraries:

  • Johnson Library: Wednesday, September 26 from 1:30-2:00
  • Sturgis Library: TBD!

What is Banned Books Week anyway?

Don't worry, the KSU Library System is not banning books! We are celebrating freedom of speech and the freedom to read by participating in the American Library Association's Banned Books Week. Banned Books Week draws attention to the harm caused by censorship and celebrates the fact that most of the time, banned or challenged books remain available. This is thanks to work by librarians, teachers, and readers who speak out for the freedom to read.
