Q: How do I find information on patents and trademarks?

A great place to start patent or trademark research is the Patent and Trademark Office of the US Department of Commerce.

Other free, searchable online resources include:

Patent Scope from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)

Google Patents

Free Patents Online (FPO)

The Government has designated more than 80 public, academic, state and special libraries to be Patents & Trademarks Resource Centers. PTRC library staff are information experts trained on how to use search tools to access patent and trademark information. The Georgia Tech Library in Atlanta is a PTRC library. To use their services and resources, you must contact their patents librarian at 404-385-7185 to make an appointment. For more information about the PTRC at Georgia Tech, click here.
