Question
Q: How do I find information on patents and trademarks?
Answer
A summary of resources for patent or trademark research is on the Mechanical Engineering (Undergraduate) Research Guide. Select the "Find Sources" tab and then select "Patent Searching."
The Mechanical Engineering Research Guide (Undergraduate) has links to the following sites:
- United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)
- Espacenet from the European Patent Office
- World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)
- PATENTSCHOPE from WIPO
The ME Research Guide (Undergraduate) also has a link to How to Conduct a Preliminary U.S. Patent Search: A Step by Step Strategy (from the USPTO)
The Government has designated more than 80 public, academic, state and special libraries to be Patents & Trademarks Resource Centers. PTRC library staff are information experts trained on how to use search tools to access patent and trademark information. The Georgia Tech Library in Atlanta is a PTRC library. To use their services and resources, you must contact their patents librarian at 404-385-7185 to make an appointment. For more information about the PTRC at Georgia Tech, click here.
